Sunmola, the philanthropist
Alhaji Safiriyu Abiodun Sunmola, Lagos State Deputy Chairman of the Action Congress (AC), is, from all indications, a quiet and unassuming individual. He is said not to be interested in publicity, cheap or expensive, but the AC chieftain has been attracting a well-deserved attention to himself and earning plaudits for his noble gestures.
According to newspaper reports, Alhaji Sunmola has been providing food for the over 800 pupils of Araromi Primary School, Gbagada, Lagos, for a long time. Until interviewed by newsmen, the 70-year-old party chieftain had kept the fact of his philanthropy secret. Indeed, in addition to the free lunch he gives to the pupils, Alhaji Sunmola has been providing free school uniforms and furniture for pupils of the school and 41 other schools in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.
IN a society where public officials are frequently found utilising public funds to build empires, Alhaji Sunmola’s charitable gestures are, indeed, a refreshing departure from what has become the norm in Nigeria. Nigerian politicians are notorious for their brazen display of opulence in stark contradistinction to the appalling economic conditions in which their roots, the masses, are entrapped. The fact that the AC deputy chairman is not holding a position that gives him access to the treasury makes the story of his philanthropic activities more compelling.
